Hollywood legend Jane Fonda warned Jennifer Lopez against putting her rekindled love story with Ben Affleck on film, saying she had “concerns” at the durability of their revived union after spending 20 years apart.
Speaking to the star in Lopez’s documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told, Fonda said: “First of all, I want you to know that I don’t entirely know why, but I feel invested in you and Ben and I really, really want this to work.
“However, this is my concern,” added Fonda. “Like it feels too much like you’re trying to prove something instead of just living it. Every other photograph is the two of you kissing the two of you hugging.”
Fonda, who became friends with Lopez after co-starring in the 2005 rom-com Monster-In-Law, told the star her concerns when the Love Don’t Cost a Thing singer approached her to appear in the documentary.
Fonda, who introduced Lopez when she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011, also spoke about her worry over photos that appeared to show Affleck looking grumpy while sitting next to Lopez at the 2023 Grammys.
“I got real scared, you know, with all that s**t about the Grammys and he looks unhappy and I’m like, ‘Oh, my God, what’s happening?’” Fonda said.
Lopez puts Fonda at ease, responding, “Nothing! He was like, ‘I’ve become the symbol of the beleaguered man.’”
Before agreeing to participate in the documentary, Fonda spoke with Lopez’s manager Benny Medina, according to Variety.
“I believe that everyone in the entire world is pulling for this relationship and this love,” Fonda told Medina.
“And the idea of how you present that is so sacrosanct, so important. It should be handled in a way that you aren’t overly flaunting it, so much so that it creates any form of criticism or resentment.”
The film was part of three works centring on her break-up and reunion with 51-year-old Affleck.

Meanwhile, her rumoured relationship woes have got the world talking amid ongoing speculation she is set to announce her fourth marriage split.
But Jennifer Lopez looked a million miles away from care as she sunned herself on a boat while cruising the idyllic waters of the Amalfi Coast during her solo jaunt to Italy.
The 54-year-old superstar showed off her enviable figure in a plunging white one-piece swimsuit as she lounged on the vessel with friends.
Alway the style queen, Lopez, sporting gold jewellery and white high heels that showed off her toned legs to full effect, wore her hair in a high ponytail and donned a pair of oversized sunglasses.
Despite long-running rumours that she and Hollywood star Ben Affleck are on the brink of divorce after selling their marital compound in Beverly Hills, the Bronx-born diva was wearing her green diamond engagement ring on her wedding finger.
At one point, the famously teetotal star appeared to be lying back and texting while holding a refreshing drink.
Lopez also appeared to take a cheeky selfie of her famous booty as she perched on the boat, with the Italian flag flying behind her in breeze.
It came after Affleck opened up about having to adjust to his wife’s “bananas” level of fame.
Speaking on comedian Kevin Hart’s show Hart to Heart, the Academy Award winner admitted to not coping with the attention foisted upon his superstar wife.
“We went somewhere with [Jennifer] — I can’t remember because she’s so famous, and she creates this — people love her, and she really represents something important to people,” Affleck said.
Recalling a situation in which he, Lopez and their children from previous marriages were walking through Times Square in New York City, Affleck said the feverish attention of fans was “f---ing bananas.”
He said: “We get out of the car, we were going to a play, and I was like, ‘F--k it, babe, we’re going to be late, we gotta walk a block and a half.’
“She was like, ‘Alright,’ she didn’t say s--t,” he said. “We get out with her, all the kids, through Times Square, and the s--t was like f---ing bananas.”
