Chris Pratt has come under fire on social media for penning an op-ed about the US election.
In his opinion piece, the Guardians of the Galaxy actor, who faced backlash last year after being found to follow numerous Instagram accounts that had previously shared anti-gay memes, urged Americans to stand united “whoever wins” the election, insisting that “we are all fellow countrymen”.
“How do we become a nation of honourable winners and graceful losers? It starts with remembering no matter who wins or loses, there are still going to be people who need help in this country,” wrote the star for Maria Shriver’s Sunday Paper.
Pratt also urged both parties to “accept the results and focus instead on showing up for each other”.
The Hollywood star also shared a tale from his childhood where he lost a wrestling match and “cried for at least an hour”.
“Sometimes your team doesn’t win,” Pratt said.
“The 2024 presidential election is three days away as I write this. The biggest game of all time approaches. Team Red versus Team Blue. A rematch for the ages. A showdown four years in the making. It’s giving UFC 3 Million energy.’”
Throughout the piece, Pratt failed to share his personal views by endorsing either candidate, which left a bad taste in the mouths of many social media users.
The polls remain incredibly close, with conflicting data in most of the swing states emerging just hours ahead of election day.
Fans across Twitter and Reddit lashed out at the actor as a result, urging him to “shut up” and stop “two-sides-ing it”.
“I wanted to comment on this piece by Chris Pratt because it hurt me to read as a trans woman who has looked up to the characters he portrays,” wrote one critic of Pratt’s piece. “My life is at stake, the bodily autonomy of my fellow trans siblings and people who can get pregnant in general, of Black people and immigrants, of anyone who disagrees with Trump’s policies, and watching Chris Pratt say ‘I see both sides’ and ‘it’s not about who wins and loses’ I cannot in good conscience believe he truly understands that people’s rights are on the line and still play both sides.”
Another questioned why Pratt had been “conspicuously missing when his fellow Avengers assembled for democracy in an ad supporting Kamala Harris.”
“Human rights are on the line and he has the audacity to say this crap,” complained another angry fan.
In 2019, Pratt defended his views publicly after actor Elliot Page alleged that the church he belongs to has a long history of homophobia.
“If you are a famous actor and you belong to an organisation that hates a certain group of people, don’t be surprised if someone simply wonders why it’s not addressed,” said Page in a tweet at the time.
