The film’s storyline, based on a well-known Chinese legend, reimagines the classic tale of Chang-E, Goddess of the Moon and Hou Yi, the heroic archer who shot down nine of 10 suns that were scorching the Earth.
Lured to the Coast by the State Government’s $50 million Production Attraction Strategy, the Mandarin language film is expected to create 300 jobs and spend more than $15.3 million in Queensland.
The movie is a partnership between producer Todd Fellman, from Brisbane’s Story Bridge Films, and some of China’s most talented and successful filmmakers including writer/director Eva Jin (Sophie’s Revenge, One Night Surprise) and producers Beaver Kwei (The Adventures) and Eileen Gong (Detective Chinatown 2).
Fellman, whose company’s was also behind locally filmed features Guardians of the Tomb, At Last, Jungle and Bait 3D, said Legend of Sun and Moon was an ambitious project that would deliver enormous benefits for the local industry.
“It sets a new benchmark for official co-productions between Australia and China,” he said.
Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira said Fellman had “arduously” worked to develop and forge collaborations with international territories and producers in the Asia Pacific region in particular.
The film will be distributed in China by Tencent, with Chinalion handling the Australian theatrical release.
Legend of Sun and Moon will film at Village Roadshow Studios until cameras begin rolling on Paramount Pictures’ Dora the Explorer live-action feature in August.
