People’s Choice Awards kick off the film awards season in style

VIN Diesel told himself he wouldn’t get emotional accepting a People’s Choice Award for Furious 7. Then he started speaking.

VIN Diesel promised himself he wouldn’t get emotional when Furious 7 won the People’s Choice Award for favourite action movie. But he was overcome as he paid tribute to his co-star and friend, the late Paul Walker who died in a car accident in November 2013.

After starting his acceptance speech with the traditional thanks, he paused and took a deep breath before continuing:

“You know, as I was coming up here, I always do this. I say I’m not going to get emotional about, you know, winning these awards, and I was cool while I was sitting in my seat, and then they handed me two awards,” he said.

“I think of Dom and Brian and I start to think of Paul. They said to make this short and sweet, so I will try to make this short and sweet. It was a labour of love. My only message to you is you’d be amazed what you can do with love. You’d be amazed at how powerful a force that is. When we didn’t want to come back to filming when the tragedy was too heavy, it was the love of everyone combined that saw us through to the end.”

He finished by singing to the cheering crowd.

Earlier in the show, Steve Harvey’s epic Miss Universe fail was re-enacted.

People’s Choice Awards host Jane Lynch called in a Miss Columbia lookalike for the stitch up, with help from The Odd Couple star Thomas Lennon, who was also in on the act.

While Lennon was making his tongue-in-cheek acceptance speech for winning the fake award, Lynch interrupted him mid-sentence to say: “I’m sorry, I have to apologise here. First runner-up is Tom Lennon. I’m so sorry man”.

Before announcing: “the winner is Miss Columbia”.

A Miss Columbia impersonator then took the stage in a gold sequin dress, sash and crown to accept the award, snatching it from Lennon and handing him a bunch of flowers.

“It’s my fault,” Lynch said. “I didn’t bother to come to dress rehearsal, and I just read the card wrong. I’m so sorry.”

Luckily, the real Miss Colombia, Ariadna found the segment quite amusing.

Last month, Harvey accidentally announced Miss Columbia Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner of Miss Universe, before explaining that she was actually the first runner-up and Miss Philippines had in fact won.

Earlier, the People’s Choice Awards red carpet kicked Hollywood’s awards season into full swing with Kate Hudson leading the pack in a white jumpsuit.

Carly Rae Jepsen, Jack Black, Vanessa Hudgens, Julianne Hough, Claire Danes, Sharon Osbourne, Jason Derulo, John Stamos and host Jane Lynch were also in attendance.

Australian actor Chris Hemsworth won the 2016 People’s Choice Award for Favourite Action Movie Actor, beating Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Vin Diesel, as well as Robert Downey Jr and Chris Pratt.

Hemsworth, who spent Christmas and New Year’s in Byron Bay, was in LA to accept the award in person.

Rebel Wilson was also nominated for Favourite Comedic Movie Actress and Australian country singer Keith Urban is up against Gwen Stefani’s new boyfriend and Grammy-nominee Blake Shelton for Favourite Male Country Artist.
