Two of Australia’s biggest acting stars have nailed top awards at the Golden Globes on a night of wild highs and crushing lows.

Sarah Snook and Elizabeth Debicki are the toast of Hollywood after landing awards for their powerful performances in the smash-hit shows Succession and The Crown.

Margot Robbie rocked the red carpet in a hot-pink gown inspired by Barbie — the biggest box-office-taking film of 2023.

But as slick as her Giorgio Armani Prive couture looked, it was a ceremony of disappointments for the flawless beauty, when the film she starred in and produced failed to land key gongs.

Adelaide-born Snook took out the best female actor in a TV drama for her riveting portrayal of Shiv Roy in Succession.

Snook wowed global audiences for her complex performance as the tough-talking Shiv in a portrayal which was at times both hilarious and heartbreaking.

Accepting her award, the star thanked her baby daughter “for changing my life in so many ways”.

The star welcomed her first child with her husband, Aussie comedian Dave Lawson, a day after last year’s momentous finale of Succession aired.

Snook showed she had lost none of her down-to-earth appeal by joking that the Golden Globes “room was so intimidating” as she finished her speech in a fit of laughter.

Melbourne-raised Debicki won best supporting female actor in a TV series for her haunting portrayal of the late Princess Diana in The Crown.

The star’s uncanny portrayal of the tragic Diana in the final days and hours of her life stunned audiences and critics alike.

Debicki dedicated the award to her godmother who “left us too quickly” and thanked her “pretend children” Ed McVey and Luther Ford who play Prince William and Prince Harry on the show.

Robbie’s Barbie ultimately earned two awards – one for best cinematic and box office achievement, the other for best original song, Billie Eilish’s touching ballad What Was I Made For?

The Greta Gerwig-directed blockbuster has smashed global box office records, surpassing the $1 billion mark just as Robbie predicted it would.

In her gracious acceptance speech Robbie – who produced the blockbuster film along with her production team – thanked Noah Baumbach for his script and co-star Ryan Gosling, who won the hearts of millions as the hapless Ken.

“Thank you to Noah Baumbach for showing his inner Barbie girl,” she said.

“Thank you to Ryan Gosling for going full beach. And America Ferrera for showing her soul.”

In a continuation of the Barbenheimer battle — when Barbie and atom bomb epic Oppenheimer vied for box office glory — Christopher Nolan’s film won best director, best film, best actor for Cillian Murphy, best supporting actor Robert Downey Jr and best score.

In an emotional acceptance speech, a clearly moved Nolan paid tribute to the late Perth-born star Heath Ledger, who starred in his 2008 film The Last Knight.

“The only time I’ve ever been on this stage before was accepting one of these on behalf of our dear friend Heath Ledger and that was complicated and challenging for me,” he said.

Comedian Jo Koy raised eyebrows with a risque opening monologue that drew a mixed reaction from the star-studded audience.

Barbie director Gerwig appeared to raise her eyebrows when Koy described Barbie as “a plastic doll with big boobies”.
