TENS of thousands of people have come from far and wide to celebrate all things rockabilly and swing at the Cooly Rocks On festival.
More than 35,000 people attended today’s festival at Coolangatta, which sees punters in colourful dresses dancing on the streets and revheads showing off their classic cars.
Rhys George and wife Sandy George drove all the way up from Adelaide for the annual festival sporting their dancing gear.
“We do dancing, go to the dissferent music events,” he said.
“I guess we travel occasionally to these things, we’ve been to Victoria and NSW. Last year we calso went overseas to Spian for rock’n’roll and then to France for swing. It’s a big part of our lives.”
Mr George said there had been a great vibe at the festival but the highlight for him had been all the classic cars.
He said while he didn’t yet have a classic car, “anything was possible.”
The pair had been at the festival since Thursday and he said the amazing weather today meant the area was packed with people.
A spokeswoman for Cooly Rocks On said police told them there were at least 35,000 people around 1pm.
“It’s amazing, it’s record crowds today,” she said.
“The sun’s shining, but the last couple years it’s rained. It’s significantly up from last year. Now we have tens of thousands of people, the streets are packed.”
She said the high today has been the morning parade where people lined the streets and then stayed to check out the rest of the festival.
“The Super Cruisers are on today,” she said.
“There’s 120 of them, they cruise the street. It’s very cool.”
There is more music and workshops to follow tonight as well.
