Two teenage males have been left fighting for their lives after a series of violent incidents in the southern reaches of the Gold Coast amid the New Year’s Eve celebrations – whilst a 15-year old girl was arrested after an alleged violent robbery in the CBD.
Police were kept busy attending the alleged assault and robbery at a convenience store business in the Southport CBD.
At least five assaults were reported on Marine Parade down in Coolangatta on Tuesday night.
The worst of the assault incidents left two young men with potentially life-threatening injuries, a Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said.
The spokeswoman said two men in their late teens both sustained serious head and facial injuries after an incident across the road from Woolworths on Marine Parade.
Paramedics were called to the scene at 10.21pm on New Year’s Eve and took the 18-year-olds to Gold Coast University Hospital.
Police said they are investigating the incident.
“Initial investigations indicate around 10.15pm two 18-year-old males were allegedly assaulted on Warner St (at the intersection of Marine Pde) by a group of unknown offenders,” a Queensland Police Service spokesman said.
“A crime scene has been declared and investigations are ongoing.”
“Any witnesses of the incident or anyone with relevant vision is urged to contact police.”
Paramedics were called to at least three other alleged assaults at Coolangatta on Tuesday night, the QAS spokeswoman said.
She said another male in his late teens was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital after a reported assault out the front of the popular Coolangatta Hotel.
Paramedics attended at 10.15pm and the man was taken to hospital with head injuries but in a stable condition.
The QAS spokeswoman said paramedics also responded to two other reported assaults on Marine Pde at Coolangatta at 9.30pm and 10.53pm, but did not treat patients at those incidents.
Earlier in the evening, in a separate violent incident, police were called to a reported assault and robbery at a Southport convenience store around 7pm.
A Queensland Police Service (QPS) spokeswoman said a teenage girl had entered the store on Nerang Street in the centre of Southport CBD, near the Australia Fair shopping centre, where she allegedly assaulted a female staff member and took an item.
The girl left prior to police officers arriving, but the QPS spokeswoman said a teenager was tracked down a short time later in Parkwood.
A 15-year-old from Mudgeeraba has been charged and will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
