OP results 2019: First Gold Coast Year 12 scores revealed

The 2019 Year 12 cohort has proven to be small but mighty, with some Gold Coast schools recording their best ever OP scores as results begin to pour in.

THE high school graduates of 2019 may be small in number, but they are making big strides, scoring impressive results as the state’s OP scores are announced today.

More than 37,700 Year 12 graduates across the state, including many on the Gold Coast, have learned their fate today, as final results were released to anxious teens.

It was a smaller than average group, and a unique one – the graduating class were the state’s first preppies in 2007, and its final to receive an Overall Position (OP) score before the system is phased out next year.

Of the cohort, 18,000 received an OP score, ranking from a top score of 1, to 25.

Across the state 535 students earned an OP1, while a further 14,500 received an OP between 2 and 15.

Among the early success stories on the Gold Coast was Somerset College, at Mudgeeraba, which received 10 OP1s, with 61 per cent of OP-eligible students receiving an OP 1 to 5.

Benowa State High School earned it’s “best ever” OP results, according to principal Mark Rickard, with 73 per cent of eligible students earning between an OP 1 to 4, and all students receiving an OP 8 or higher.

A total of 36 per cent of Varsity College students received OPs ranging from 1 to 5, while at Elanora State High School 81 per cent of year 12 students achieved an OP between 1 and 15.

Meanwhile statewide more than 22,500 students were awarded a VET qualification ranging from Certificate 1-4.

Chief executive of the Queensland Curriculum Assessment Authority (QCAA) Chris Rider said a proportionately high number of 2019 students had been “very successful”.

Mr Rider said more than 850 Queensland teens had been “straight A students”, earning A-grades each semester over two years.

“In a small cohort that is a proportionately high number, so this year’s Year 12s have achieved straight As in larger numbers proportionately than what we’ve had in previous years,” he said.

Around 93 per cent of students were awarded their Queensland Certificate of Education.

Education Minister Grace Grace said the results were “outstanding” and “very strong”.

But Minister Grace urged students who were disappointed with their results not to give up.

“Students who didn’t receive the score they thought that they may get, don’t be disheartened, there are many opportunities and pathways for them to follow for them to be able to follow their dreams,” she said.

Next year Queensland will move to the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking) system, meaning students will need to receive a 99.95 in order to earn the equivalent of an OP1.

Minister Grace said the new system would be an “exciting” step forward for Queensland.

“It brings us into line with every other state and territory in Australia and it’s going to be a whole new way of assessing students,” she said.

“OP has served us well... but the new ATAR score, we believe everyone is very prepared and we’ve had excellent feedback.”
