A tiny Gippsland primary school in a town of less than 700 people has outperformed many of its larger counterparts to emerge as one of the region’s top academic schools.

Grade fives from Willow Grove Primary School — located about 19km north of Moe — were the best performing in Gippsland for their cohort, according to the most recent NAPLAN results.

Reading was a particularly strong suit for Willow Grove students who scored an average score of 566 in this area — the highest of Gippsland’s 86 primary schools.

Likewise the school also performed strongly in grammar skills, writing, spelling and numeracy.

Willow Grove principal Tamara Halket said she was “extremely proud” of her students.

“These results showcase the high-quality teaching and learning program that happens at our small school,” she said.

“Our students and staff are an incredible team and we are excited to continue these successful outcomes in the future.”

Prestigious Warragul school St Paul’s Anglican Grammar also retained its position in the top few best performing primary schools in Gippsland.

Yinnar Primary School was the only Gippsland school to score “well above” the state average — among students with a similar background — across four subjects, including reading, writing, grammar and numeracy.

Of Gippsland’s high schools St Thomas Aquinas College in Tynong had the best NAPLAN scores.
