SA’s largest college named among The Educator’s five-star rated schools in Australia

Three Adelaide schools have been named among 34 innovative five-star Australian colleges. See which schools made the cut.

South Australia’s largest school has been named among 34 of the top institutions around the country.

Trinity College, a private school with more than 4400 students across six campuses in Adelaide, was named in The Educator Magazine’s list of five-star educational institutions in Australia.

It was one of three SA schools that made the grade, including private campuses Loreto College Marryatville in Adelaide’s east and St Peter’s Woodlands Grammar School in Glenelg.

At Trinity, with campuses in Adelaide’s north including at Evanston South, Roseworthy and Gawler, students benefit from “the intimacy of small school environments with the breadth of a large, well-resourced institution”, head of college Nick Hately said.

The school’s urban fringe location means its students can engage in uncommon opportunities such as its equestrian, cattle and goat clubs.

Trinity also has a barista in its community with five operational cafes.

Year 12 students Erin Doudle and Dalton Stedall feel the school is setting them up for their future careers.

Dalton, 17, said the size of the school was “pretty crazy” but that came with “lots of resources” as there are more than 700 staff to support students across all of its campuses.

“There are so many teachers with teaching styles that can support individual students’ needs,” he said.

One of the largest on-campus theatres in the state facilitated Erin’s passion for the performing arts.

“I love the performing arts space at Trinity and it provides us with the best opportunities,” the 17-year-old said.

The Educator, a publication for education professionals, selected the top schools based on six criteria including “innovative extra-curricular programs”, “comprehensive student support” and “technology in learning”.

Schools were awarded five-stars after leaders, administrators and education professionals were invited to complete a detailed online survey about their institutions.

Loreto College Marryatville principal Kylie McCullah said the recognition reflected “not only the strength of our programs, but the collective commitment of our staff, students and families to nurture excellence”.

“Our focus at Loreto College has always been to provide an education that goes beyond academics, supporting every girl to grow into an empowered and socially conscious young woman,” she said.

Ms McCullah highlighted the school’s social, emotional and academic development program embedded into the college’s curriculum.

For Helen Finlay, principal at St Peter’s Woodlands Grammar School, success came through “a whole-child approach that values academic growth alongside wellbeing”.

Ms Finlay highlighted the primary school’s program for its year 6 students to gain real-world skills such as first aid, meal planning and cooking and community service.

“It’s about setting them up not just for high school, but for life beyond the classroom,” Ms Finlay said.

“It’s an incredible privilege to lead one of the top schools in the country and I feel both honoured and humbled.”
