Adelaide mum has lost her job, lives in shame after threatening to slit throat of her daughter’s alleged bully inside classroom, court told
A mum who stormed a classroom and threatened to slit the throat of her daughter’s alleged bully has been condemned by a magistrate.
A mum who threatened to slit the throat of her daughter’s alleged bully was at her wits’ end after years of “incessant” torture, has lost her job and lives with “shame”, a court has heard.
The northern suburbs mother of six, whose identity is suppressed to avoid “undue hardship” to her children, appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court for sentencing submissions on Tuesday after pleading guilty to assault.
Magistrate Lynette Duncan said the woman – whose offending included a verbal tirade of slurs and death threats directed at a year 7 student – should never have taken the law into her own hands.
“Essentially, what your client did – as an adult against a child – exhibited exactly the same type of behaviour as she was criticising this complainant of engaging in,” Ms Duncan said.
“Children are entitled to feel safe at school. Her daughter … (and) the complainant were entitled to feel safe at school.
“She initiated (the offending); in that she left home, drove to the school, sought out the complainant in a classroom … I’m not sure on what basis she thought that was ever going to be a calm or constructive conversation.”
The incident occurred inside the classroom of a northern suburbs school – with footage, obtained by 7NEWS, allegedly showing the woman confront two students over a bullying incident involving her daughter.
“You ever f*****g mess with my daughter again I’ll slit your f*****g throat,” she can be heard yelling.
“You want to f*****g go b***h? You want to f****** go? You ever f****** talk to my daughter again.
“I’m your f*****g nightmare b***h … I’ll slit your f*****g throat. I’ll be waiting for you.”
On Tuesday, the court heard the mother “barged towards” the victim before she was restrained by other teachers.
It was further submitted the woman’s daughter had been the alleged victim of bullying for over two years prior to the offending – and had, on multiple occasions, been told to take her own life.
Christina Chrisakis, for the woman, told the court her client – who has since lost her employment – “continues to live with shame” as a result of her actions.
“This is a situation whereby it’s a mother who had tried all the right ways,” Ms Chrisakis said. “She was not in the right frame of mind when she responded in the way that she did.”
Ms Duncan remanded the woman on continuing bail to return to court next month for continuing submissions.
