'Use common sense': One Covid case sends two Qld flights into isolation over Christmas

Queensland has recorded 22 new cases of Covid-19, as Health Minister Yvette D’Ath issued a dire warning about masks and an increase cases.

Seven of the cases were locally acquired, and 12 more were acquired from interstate.

Ms D’Ath said that Queensland is getting closer to 90 per cent single dosed.

“We are seeing an increase for people coming forward for the boosters,” she said.

“We are getting closer to 90 per cent first dose, which means we will get to that 90 per cent double dose some time in January.

“One of the positive cases was a visitor at an aged care facility (in Holland Park) and measures are being talent o test staff and residents at that aged care facility.

“We have identified three omicron cases here in Queensland, one is the Townsville gentleman … thankfully this person has had very limited exposure beyond those flights and the airport, the other is a female from Rochedale South, who we previously had reported had been in Queensland … and the third one is an international aircrew (member) who has not been out in the community.

Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard said slowing the spread of the virus is now a priority, rather than stopping it altogether.

“What we are aiming to do is to slow the spread of the virus, particularly to get the third dose of vaccine,” he said.

Queenslanders are eligible for a booster shot after five months from their second dose.

“At the moment there is availability to (get a booster) … GPs, pharmacies and the state centres,” Dr Gerrard said.

Dr Gerrard ruled out a ‘Freedom Day’ and said the UK’s was a mistake, and said that more Queenslanders are getting vaccinated every day.

“The hesitancy of (Covid-19 vaccination) in Queensland is melting away. Every day you see an increase in cases,” he said.

This comes after a surge in cases from NSW, recording 1742, with no deaths, and 192 being treated in hospital and 26 in the ICU.

In Victoria, 1622 new cases were recorded and another nine people have died.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15: A FLIGHT to the Gold Coast has been listed as a Covid-19 exposure site just days after the Queensland-NSW border reopened.

Flight JQ430 from Melbourne to Gold Cost on Tuesday, Dec 14 was part of a number of new exposure sites announced on the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Townsville.

All passengers in rows 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 on the 5-5.30pm flight are close contacts.

All other passengers are considered casual contacts.

A popular Coast small business has also been forced to close after a staff member tested positive to Covid-19 last week, with owners saying they are ‘in shock’.

Currumbin’s Lazarus Film lab co-owners Morgan Wagstaff and Blake Pace have been put into isolation after Mr Pace tested positive to the virus last week.

Queensland Health listed the Lazarus Film Lab as an exposure site on December 7, 8 and 9.

They posted to Instagram five days ago and said they had to close their doors because they were a ‘two-man show’.

“We’re investigating options to continue processing (if the overlords will allow it, unlikely) but for now the machines are off and that’s all we know,” they said.

“We can’t believe this is happening and as a small business we’re not quite sure what this means for us, but you’re support and understanding means the world.

“We’re honestly in shock.

“There are small businesses all over the Coast affected by this outbreak so please look into that,” both Mr Pace and Ms Wagstaff said.

On December 10, a Palm Beach cafe Vegepatch Studios posted to their Instagram saying a customer who visited the cafe on December 7 between 7.30-8am tested positive to the virus.

Co-owners Molly Bowes and Jordan Galinie said they were required to stop trading immediately until negative Covid-19 tests were returned.

Both businesses have been contacted by the Bulletin for a further update.

Covid LATEST:

QUEENSLAND’S top medical adviser has warned residents that the predicted Covid peak is now likely to hit within weeks not months because the Omicron strain is “very contagious”.

Overnight the state recorded six new interstate-acquired Covid cases including one the Gold Coast and in the south of Brisbane.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the new cases were detected after Queensland’s border reopened, all were interstate travellers. One is likely to have the Omicron variant and some have been active in Queensland communities for up to six days.

The Gold Coast case, an interstate traveller from Victoria, was believed to have spent December 14 active in the community.

One interstate-acquired case is a person who attended the Argyle Hotel in Newcastle, New South Wales – the epicentre of a concerning Omicron outbreak.

It’s also been revealed that there are 51,000 domestic travellers and 440 internationals waiting to enter Queensland.

Chief health officer Dr John Gerrard said Covid cases were spread right across the state, from Goondiwindi to Townsville, Gold Coast, Wide Bay and south of Brisbane.

He said health experts were expecting Queensland to be flooded with Omicron cases quicker than first forecast because of what was happening in NSW and the UK.

NSW recorded 1360 new cases overnight and one death, according to NSW Health.

“As I’ve said, this virus is going to continue to spread,” Dr Gerrard said.

“It is very clear now that Omicron is very contagious and most of us now the believe that the speed with which we’ll a peak is probably faster than we originally anticipated.

“It’s probably we’re talking more in the weeks than the months.

“What we’re seeing in NSW and the UK, it’s very much faster and it’s much more contagious than we’ve seen previously with Delta

“So we’ll be seeing that (peak) in the coming days and weeks and I think we can reasonably expect Omicron will spread in Queensland in the coming weeks.

“It won’t be a surprise, we aren’t going to change our plans as a result of that.”

Dr Gerrard said being vaccinated would in most cases stop severe disease, and he warned residents it was “not unusual” to get infected with Covid if vaxxed.

He said the importance of being vaccinated was around ensuring infected people only had a mild illness from the coronavirus.

Meanwhile dozens of passengers deemed to be close contacts of a positive case on two flights have been released from quarantine after originally been told they would spend Christmas locked away.

Ms D’Ath said the public health unit had acted cautiously, but on health advice the government has overturned the decision, with only those seated in the two rows in front and behind made to quarantine.

“Omicron is so new that we needed to assess and Delta we did the same thing … they might have passed each other on the way to the bathroom,” she said.

“I welcome that advice that we believe we can keep the risk level exactly the same as we have with Delta.”

It was also revealed at the Covid press conference at Brisbane that about 25,000 motorists had been checked at road borders while entering Queensland in the past 24 hours.

About 5000 airport checks were also conducted.

Police said people were still arriving without border passes, that was slowly the process down.

Travellers were also reminded that masks are still mandatory in airport terminals.
