QLD border closure: Bulletin readers overwhelmingly agree government has ‘lost the plot’

The Gold Coast Bulletin asked readers their view on the state government’s handling of the border issue. The verdict was damning.

Border wars, QLD vs NSW

A snap poll of Bulletin readers has delivered a damning verdict on the state government’s handling of the border closure.

Following news that the state government was refusing to admit in the High Court the closure was causing financial hardship to suffering Gold Coast business, The Bulletin asked subscribers if they believed they had “lost the plot”.

The verdict was damning. Of almost 1400 votes cast by 5pm today, 87% agreed, while only 13% disagreed.

The result came as Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk appeared to soften her position on reopening the border following sustained criticism.

Ms Palaszczuk today strongly hinted that the border with NSW could reopen next month, describing NSW’s latest coronavirus figures as “very encouraging”.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison also made his strongest plea yet for the border to be reopened.

“We need to get planes flying around Australia and if you want to see planes flying around Australia, we need to open up these domestic borders,” he said at Question time in Canberra.

“This isn’t a partisan issue. This is about ensuring that our economies can open up.

“I would be hoping that at the earliest possible opportunity states will be able to indicate the date in July that interstate travel will be open again to be able to give that certainty.”
