Gold Coast house parties shut down by police

POLICE have released video of house parties they shut down in Carrara, Pimpama and Banyo on Saturday.

The footage shows revellers enjoying loud music before police arrive, and in many cases, reacting with anger when they are ordered to stop.

One man is seen to ask police “who do you think you are” after they halt his birthday party.

Multiple people were issued with $1300 fines following the incidents.

In the case of one of the houses, it was the second night in a row that police attended.

Officers were first called to the house Fitzwilliam Street at Carrara around 11.30pm on Friday following a noise complaint.

When officers arrived, they found a group of people aged in their early 20s having a birthday party for one of the residents.

The group allegedly admitted to officers they were aware of the Chief Health Officer’s (CHO) directives and had still rented the home for the purpose of staging celebrations.

Seven males aged between 21 and 25 were issued with infringement notices of $1,334 and a noise abatement direction was issued.

Having not learnt their lesson, police were again called to the residence the following night in response to a noise complaint.

Officers located another large group of revellers, including five people who had been fined the previous evening.

A further 18 infringement notices were handed out to 12 men aged between 19 and 25, and six women aged 19 to 21.

Attending crews also seized stereo equipment to ensure compliance with the previous noise abatement direction.

In another incident on Saturday night, police responded to a noise complaint just after 9pm and witnessed dozens of people fleeing a Maurie Pears Crescent address at Pimpama.

The host of the party, a 28-year-old man, was issued with an infringement notice for failing to comply with the CHO’s direction.

Police said it was “frustrating” to see so many people flouting restrictions.

Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler said it was frustrating to see people blatantly flouting restrictions on each one of these occasions.

“This type of behaviour puts all Queenslanders at risk and counteracts the hard work police have doing,” Chief Superintendent Wheeler said.

“It’s especially disappointing considering the vast majority of Gold Coast residents doing the right thing and following the rules in line with the easing of restrictions across the weekend.

“Blatant disregard of the COVID-19 directives will not be tolerated, as has been demonstrated by fines being issued on each of these occasions.”
