Hundreds of shops now open as retailers prepare for busy weekend

Hundreds of shops will be open and ready for a massive weekend as restrictions ease heading into Mother’s Day. SEE THE FULL LIST

Why you’re unlikely to get the coronavirus from groceries or takeout

MAJOR Gold Coast shopping centres have been reporting a “significant” jumps in sales as coronavirus restrictions continue to ease. And this weekend is expected to be a busy one.

From Sunday, single households or families of up to five people are able to visit another household. Retailers are opening up again with restrictions on ‘non-essential shopping’ also eased.

This week, retail centres have been gradually welcoming customers back but with conditions and social distancing still in place.

The Oasis centre manager Tim Grigg said traders were eager for customers to return, after a difficult period.

“We would love our community and customers to support our local businesses that have been closed for five weeks,” Mr Grigg said.

“They really need us now...”

National Retail Association chief executive Dominique Lamb said the $1 billion hit to the sector in March would take a long time to recover from.

“It’s actually much harder to come back from something like this than it is to close stores,” Ms Lamb said.

“Many retailers closed stores not because they were forced to … but because there was reduced foot traffic.”

Social distancing and heightened hygeine practices at shopping centres are likely to remain in place for some time.

Earlier in the week, Robina Town Centre general manager Kathleen Hart said most people had been doing the right thing when visiting.

“We’re seeing increased foot traffic through the centre since the easing of restrictions on the weekend and several of our retailers have made the decision to reopen,” she said.

All shopping centres are implementing procedures to ensure visitor safety which include signage, PA system announcements, increased cleaning, sanitiser stations throughout the centre and increased security staff.
