Queensland health authorities optimistic as Covid hospitalisation numbers fall

Multiple Gold Coast areas are still struggling to pass even 85 per cent fully vaccinated as the city’s vaccination rates continue to lag.

Health officials announced on Tuesday Queensland had hit its 90 per cent fully vaccinated target, even as the state recorded 12 more deaths.

But the Gold Coast’s average – as of Feb 6 – remains at just 86.8 per cent fully vaccinated, and 88.9 per cent had received one dose.

The city’s northern areas continue to lag well behind the statewide average, with the Hinterland region recording 83.3 per cent of residents having had their second dose.

Robina had 83.8 per cent of the eligible population fully vaccinated, while Nerang had 84 per cent fully vaccinated.

The Broadbeach-Burleigh area is the only region to have surpassed the 90 per cent mark, sitting at 90.8 per cent fully vaxxed and 92.8 partially vaxxed.

The 90 per cent milestone has prompted business leaders to call for mandates on hospitality venues to be removed.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland Policy and Advocacy general manager Amanda Rohan told the Bulletin: “This is the day Queensland businesses have been hanging out for months.”

“We know contact tracing requirements have been removed for some businesses but those under the vaccine mandate are still impacted,” she said.

Health officials have maintained there are “no plans” to relax restrictions for unvaccinated Queenslanders even as the state surpassed the 90 per cent milestone.

A QLD Health spokesperson said vaccination is the states pathway out of the pandemic. “Vaccination mandates will remain in place for as long as they are needed to keep Queenslanders safe,” they said.

“Covid-19 will become endemic – that means having settled to a relatively constant rate of occurrence.

“With all infectious diseases that are endemic, like the flu, there may be a need for localised public health measures, so it doesn’t evolve into a pandemic again.

“As parts of Queensland approach their peak, it is essential that we continue to use techniques which have contributed to our successful pandemic response.

“As with all vaccines, uptake tends to wane as higher vaccination rates are reached.”
