Exclusive: Australia Post is looking to boost its workforce by up to 3000 workers to make sure Christmas deliveries get through.
Staff are needed throughout Australia, from regional areas to capital cities, with the most need in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.
Top of Australia Post’s wish list for the “critical” workers are forklift truck drivers, with seasonal casual roles also available for freight handlers and parcel processors.
Executive General Manager People and Culture Susan Davies said they were looking for applicants “ASAP” ahead of the Christmas peak so they could met the demand.
“It’s a great opportunity to earn some extra money... and help deliver Christmas so everyone gets the parcels and letters and mail on time,” she said.
The roles have an adult pay rate starting at $31.85 per hour.
The recruitment drive for the positions is under way to make sure the roles are all filled ahead of the peak time.
“Christmas is always a busy time for us and we start that build up around about October November time. So we’re looking for casuals to join us now,” Ms Davies said.
“It’s just to deal with the volumes and give Santa a hand.”
Ms Davies said Australia Post was confident it would get the required workers despite the low unemployment rate.
“There’s always a big interest in people working for Australia Post and there’s an opportunity for casuals to stay on in ongoing opportunities after – about 15 per cent of our 2022 season or casuals actually stayed on in permanent positions,” she said.
The casual roles cover a wide range of shifts, from morning afternoon to night, with roles in weekday and weekend work.
“Casual hours may range from 20 hours a week up to 36.75 hours per week, depending on each facility’s requirements... and obviously, once you make contact then we can work through what’s best for each individual.”
Regional areas that need staff include New England and Northern Rivers in NSW, Bunbury and Kalgoorlie in WA, Katherine, Alice Springs and Darwin in the NT, Mount Gambier and Port Lincoln in SA, Seymour, Gippsland and Ballarat in Victoria, and Gympie and Pinkenba in Queensland.
It comes as Amazon also called for 1,000 casuals to help deliver parcels.
“Our seasonal roles are great for those who want something shorter term like students on their summer break, retirees looking to stay active, or someone who may have had time off and is wanting to get back into the workforce to earn some extra money,” Amazon Australia Director of HR Jacqui Marker said.
“We encourage anyone looking for a fulfilling, short term role in a safe, exciting and positive work environment to apply, we provide on-the-job training so no previous experience is required.”
Fulfilment centre associates starting rate of pay is $30.80 per hour plus penalties if a night, early morning or weekend shift is worked.
Logistics site associates starting rate of pay is $30.99 plus penalties if they work night, early morning or weekend shifts.
