Confronting CCTV footage has revealed the moment a supermarket security guard body slams a customer following an altercation in the store’s self-serve checkout.
Footage depicts the pair talking at the checkout at the Coles store in Prahran on May 4 before the customer, who appeared to be a young boy with a backpack, suddenly throws a punch, striking the security guard in the head.
The guard immediately strikes back and a scuffle ensues. The security grabs the customer around the upper body, lifts him into the air and throws him to the ground with considerable force.
The customer manages to get back to his feet and lunges at the security guard.
The brawl continues until the guard beaks free. He then open-hand slaps the customer across the face, knocking him backwards.
The young customer lunges at the security guard again but is pushed into the bagging area and pinned to the wall.
At that point a store manager standing nearby intervenes and tries to pull the two apart.
A Coles spokesman said police were notified of the incident, which was “reported immediately and reviewed accordingly with our security service provider”.
He said Coles was “satisfied” with the outcome of the review.
“We regularly train and develop our team members to help them manage anti-social behaviour and provide them with tools to help them remain safe in high-risk situations,” the spokesman said.
“Our security providers are required to work in line with Coles’ approved standard operating procedures and appropriately train their guards for our retail environment.
“We regularly review the performance of our contracted security service and address any issues with our service provider if they arise.”
