Speculation mounts over a potential Dubai-style theme park in Caboolture
Queensland's entertainment landscape could be set for a Dubai-style theme park with speculation that Middle Eastern investors are eyeing a spot in the southeast for their next grand venture.
We’re hearing all types of chatter about plans for a Dubai-styled theme park in the Caboolture area with speculation Middle Eastern investors are eyeing a spot in the southeast for their next grand venture.
Citybeat has done a bit of snooping and everyone seems to be keeping mum about the project, although we know that a group has been in talks with the City of Moreton Bay.
We’ve approached Councillor Adam Hain who represents the area but he didn’t return phone calls.
What we do know is that the Middle East group – which is funding the venture – has representatives in Australia who are doing the early heavy lifting.
A council spokesman played a straight bat when we asked a few curly questions.
“Thanks to our enviable lifestyle, progressive and business friendly approach, central SEQ location, proximity to Brisbane Airport, and rapid population growth, Council has regular meetings with external parties interested in investing in City of Moreton Bay,” they said.
“Council does not respond to speculation regarding any potential opportunities.”
For the record Dubai is renowned as the United Arab Emirates fun state.
It offers several world-class theme parks with unique “Dubai-style” experiences, emphasising large-scale entertainment and immersive environments.
Popular theme parks include IMG Worlds of Adventure, Motiongate Dubai, which combines multiple Hollywood studios into one destination, and Aquaventure World.
It looks like a lot of fun.
Cleaning up
The planned $750m low carbon steel mill in Pinkenba is a step closer in a boost for the sector amid growing pressure to cut emissions and reduce reliance on imports.
ASX-listed Sims Limited and Equest Steel Pty Ltd, trading as Alter Steel, have entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding to establish a scrap supply and services agreement supporting Alter’s proposed electric arc furnace planned for Pinkenba.
Under the terms of the MOU, it is proposed that Sims would exclusively supply up to
550,000 tonnes of ferrous scrap annually, manage Alter Steel’s scrap inventory on a just-in-
time basis, and provide access to port and rail infrastructure via the staged development of
Sims’ Pinkenba site.
Alter is part of the privately owned WA-based Westview Group, which was founded by the Johnston family in 1995, and operates a number of other brands including Bestbar, Wire Industries and Unipod.
Westview CEO Grant Johnston – who is also managing director of Alter Steel – said the collaboration with Sims completes the supply chain to deliver the cleanest steel in Australia.
“Sims is a global leader in metal recycling, and we’re proud to have them alongside us on
this project,” he says.
“Together, we’ll transform local scrap into high value steel, cut emissions, and keep manufacturing onshore. Construction is planned to commence in 2026, with operations
beginning in 2028.
“This project positions Queensland at the forefront of Australia’s low carbon steel industry.”
The facility plans to turn local scrap into 500,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel each year, keeping manufacturing in Australia and supplying Queensland and national projects with lower carbon material.
Alter Steel’s Pinkenba mill is expected to create over 600 construction jobs and more than
220 permanent skilled positions across steelmaking, trades, engineering and logistics once
operational.
The company has recently achieved several key milestones, including conditional development approval for the site and a supplier agreement with global technology and equipment partner Danieli.
Sims’ Pinkenba investment represents a significant development for its Australia and New
Zealand operations and strategy.
Plans are focused on the staged development of the site into a world-class strategic logistics and metal recycling hub.
