CRICKET legend Shane Warne had fans royally flushed in March, flipping cards instead of a ball at the Southport Sharks club.
Warne played a $5000 buy-in event at the five-day Australian Poker Tour tournament, bringing realty-television star son Jackson, 21, on a road trip from Victoria via Sydney and Byron Bay for the occasion.
The bowler kept an impressive poker face, multi-tasking during play by watching St Kilda take on GWS on his iPad.
Between brewing gin for his company SevenZeroEight, flogging hair loss treatments and commentating on Fox Sports Australia, the former Australian bowler is a keen poker player, travelling the world to play for cash and charity events.
Speaking to the Gold Coast Bulletin during a break in play, Warne said there were a lot of similarities between bowling and poker.
“It’s very similar, I was a leg spinner, so that was all about strategy and patience – on these long days there are a lot of similarities,” he said.
“I like to sit around the table and work out who’s who.”
Although he’d have liked his rounds to have gone a bit better, Warne said the trip had been a good one.
“Jackson cashed out and came 19th,” he said.
“The Gold Coast hasn’t put on the weather for us – we were looking forward to morning swims – but the ATP have put on a great tournament.
“I love it up here so hopefully I’ll be up again soon.”
Boxing champ Jeff Horn, another regular on the Australia Poker Tournament, was also at the event, which CEO David Miles said had attracted more than 5000 entries and a record prize pool.
Warne played in the World Series of Poker in 2014 and again in 2015, when he placed 597th and took $17,282 in winnings.
In 2018, he placed fourth in the Aussie Millions tournament, pocketing $32,568 in winnings and in 2019 he came 12th in World Poker Tour’s Broadbeach tournament at The Star, taking home $22,785.
