THE owner of the historic Queen St Convenience Store in Southport is hoping to squeeze a profit after ditching plans for student accommodation and listing the building for sale.
The store, which was vacated in February, had been a Southport icon for more than 120 years.
After the building sold in September, 2016, Southport councillor Dawn Crichlow said she would fight to preserve the building from demolition to make way for an eight-level building intended to house students.
However, the single-storey timber building on a 761sq m block has remained untouched after owner QJ Development Group Pty Ltd, linked to China-born investor Jian Lin, opted not to develop the site so it could focus on a residential development in Carrara.

No development application was filed.
Ray White Commercial Southport’s Wayne Devenport, who marketed the building in 2016 when it sold for $1.09 million, said the property is an ideal development site due to its proximity to Australia Fair, TAFE, and China Town.
The property has priced at offers over $1.2 million.
