A POPULAR Japanese restaurant has collapsed, as staff and others chase debts of more than half a million dollars

The company behind O Sushi Broadbeach, Sakura Catering Pty Ltd, went into administration on April 30 owing $530,678.50, according to documents lodged with ASIC.

The Broadbeach store’s Instagram page and landing page on the O Sushi website have been removed and the restaurant is also listed as closed on On TripAdvisor.

The restaurant’s sudden administration comes after a flurry of closures around the city, including two in the past week of That Italian Place in Chevron Island, as well as Cicchetti at Isle of Capri.

A creditor’s report for O Sushi Broadbeach said 13 staff members were owed $46,484.53 in wages and entitlements.

Other creditors are owed $484,193.97, including a company that used to own restuarant O Sushi Coolangatta, owed the largest amount totalling $274,453.66.

O Sushi Coolangatta was purchased from the owners in August 2018 and is not associated with the Broadbeach business. There are no suggestions that O Sushi Coolangatta owe creditors money.

Two years ago the Coolangatta restaurant welcomed Amber Heard into the eatery, sharing a photo with the Hollywood star to social media at the time.

Liquidators are unsure whether any money will be returned to creditors, with liquidator Jason Bettles of Worrells finding the company had assets of just $26,865.

Mr Bettles could not be contacted this week.

O Sushi Broadbeach’s sole remaining director is Nir Bengemin Benglas after three other listed directors resigned the day before the restaurant went into administration.

The Bulletin attempted to contact co-owner Tony Syme for comment.

The restaurant was registered in 2006 and was prominently situated in the swanky part of Broadbeach close to luxurious resort The Oracle.

In 2015, the restaurant placed in the top 10 best sushi restaurants on the Gold Coast in a Bulletin poll.

Despite O Sushi Broadbeach’s closure, the restaurant received a five-star review on TripAdvisor just days ago, with a customer writing in to say the “food was so yummy” after their visit in April.

“The service excellent and the overall ambience much appreciated for walk-ins with no booking. Great place to eat if you are holidaying in Broadbeach,” the reviewer wrote.

Both the Coolangatta and Byron Bay stores are still in operation.
