ONE of the Gold Coast’s most popular pubs will close for more than two years while it is redeveloped into a two-tower resort.
The big-money revamp of the Kirra Beach Hotel, put forward by KTQ Development, is expected to be green-lit tomorrow at council.
The hotel, which opened in 1956 and overlooks one of the world’s most famous surf breaks, will be replaced by a mixed-use project with two towers of 10 and 15 storeys.
The pub will be rebuilt on the ground floor as a two-storey venue with a rooftop bar and dining facility.
An “activated laneway” retail area will be created next to the boutique resort hotel and apartment towers.
If approved today, construction will begin in late 2020 once a detailed final design is completed.
Development director Jeremy Holmes said the project would replace a proposal that was approved in 2015.
The new proposal came after two parcels of land neighbouring the hotel were amalgamated.
“Our vision has always been for a world-class neighbourhood centre in this exceptional beachside location, and we’re excited at the opportunity to deliver just that,” Mr Holmes said.
“This project will provide living, retail, dining and tourism accommodation that is unmistakably Kirra, but sets a new standard for the people who live here, work here, holiday here.

“During our community consultation, hotel regulars made it clear that a front bar overlooking the beach must be retained, and that will be the first thing we build.
“In time, this beautiful new coastal precinct will deliver jobs and homes for locals and a luxury resort in the best location to showcase the southern Gold Coast.”
Of 17 submissions made on the project, six were in support.
