The boss of Queensland construction giant Hutchinson Builders has been caught up in the chaos of the Burning Man Festival in the US.
Scott Hutchinson, head of the country’s biggest privately owned construction firm, is one of thousands of festival goers trapped in the Nevada Desert amid a flood emergency.
“It’s absolutely mad,” Hutchinson tells City Beat. “We are all just stuck here and people are partying like it’s just started. The ground is absolute glue.”
The weather event has caused chaos at the event, which is held annually in the Nevada desert, with organisers urging thousands of trapped attendees to conserve food and water.
Two to three months’ worth of rain – up to two centimetres – hit the remote area on Friday, forcing officials to block any entry or exit from the festival. One person has now been confirmed dead.
Hutchison later said at 1200 (AEDT) that “I will be here for at least another 24 hours”.
He said there were many Australians at the event.
Hutchinson has attended every Burning Man for the past decade and had previously vowed “to never miss one until I die,” “Other festivals take you away a bit. This one takes you to another planet,” he says. “It’s 80,000 people doing exactly what they want. Anything you can think of but nothing you can print.”
Singer Casey Donovan also has shared a message with her thousands of followers after becoming trapped at the festival. Famed DJ Diplo shared his and Chris Rock’s Burning Man escape on social media but not before they were forced to trek 10km through the mud.
