BURLEIGH company Transit Australia Group has signed a lucrative deal with the vast masterplanned city of Dubai South, which will be home to a million people and the world’s largest airport.

The group signed a deal to provide the first of what it hopes will be many electric buses for the 145sq km city, which is 10 years into its creation and has been chosen to host World Expo 2020.

TAG CEO Michael McGee said there was potential for additional e-buses through Bustech, the manufacturing arm of the company.

“Dubai South is a truly incredible, integrated urban project,” he said.

“It is a visionary city, with a 50-year horizon and it is hard to comprehend its scale until you personally visit the site.

“To be working in partnership with the Dubai South team to help strategically plan the mass

transit system is a huge honour for TAG and a real recognition of our capability internationally.”

Dubai South acting CEO Ahmed Al Ansari said the deal with the Gold Coast company would advance its ambition to build a sustainable, innovative urban destination.

“At Dubai South we are pioneering an ambitious smart city transformation guided by people’s happiness,” he said.

“The aim is to build a smart city that enables its people to do smart things with minimum ecological impact and the environmentally friendly e-bus is a positive step in that direction.”

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad visited the region on a trade mission earlier this year.

Queensland Trade Commissioner Donna Massie said the state enjoyed a strong relationship with South Dubai.

“I’m proud to support Transit Australia Group as a company which demonstrates Australia’s

world-class expertise and manufacturing capabilities,” she said.

“With construction of what will be the world’s largest airport under way and international mega-companies such as Ikea, Nestle, DHL, Emirates Cargo, among others, already operating from Dubai South, the need for world-class transport solutions for the city is imminent.”

Mr McGee said TAG was well placed to expand in the region and provide the new city with an end-to-end mass transit solution.

“To be able to begin to explore the potential of an innovative mass transit strategy with Dubai

South and see the remarkable vision of His Highness Sheik Mohammed come to life is an honour and a privilege,” he said.
