MORE than half a million dollars has already been spent to revamp a Gold Coast golf club which shut suddenly.

The Helensvale Golf Club, owned by the Gold Coast City Council, was leased earlier this year to Brett Lawton, 52, his son Christopher, 25, and daughter Danielle, 23.

The family has three decades of experience managing golf courses in Brisbane and Ipswich.

Area councillor William Owen-Jones said the working was moving at a quick pace.

“The clubhouse is definitely ‘work in progress’ at the moment, but to their credit the Lawtons are throwing everything at it,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Brett tells me well over $500,000 invested so far, but they remain on track for a December reopening.

“The new grass on the greens is striking well and the course is being worked back to playing condition.

“I think that the automation of the irrigation system is still causing some frustration.”

Receivers were appointed to the club in early 2018, forcing its closure in March that year.

Council was forced to mow the lawn while it searched for a new tenant.

The lease arrangment on the site lasts for 25 years.
