Gold Coast development: First look at new retro rooftop bar at Nobby Beach

A new rooftop bar with a retro theme will be built overlooking one of the Gold Coast’s busiest roads – but you’ll have to get in quick as an even bigger development is on the way. SEE THE FIRST IMAGES

A NEW rooftop bar with a retro theme and its own 1950s-era Airstream caravan will be built overlooking one of the Gold Coast’s busiest roads.

The bar will occupy the second level of a Nobby Beach building on the corner of Gold Coast Highway and Lavarack Road.

The Bulletin this month reported the site would be one of two redeveloped in Nobby Beach under a striking plan by the area’s two biggest commercial landowners, fruiterer George Manettas and developer Daniel Veitch.

To be built above the Grill’d restaurant, the Motel G rooftop bar will be an “interim” measure before the site is redeveloped to create a dining and shopping precinct.

Plans filed with the Gold Coast City Council on Wednesday show it will feature a bar where food will also be served, raised and platform seating as well as a picnic area and table seating under a pergola and toilets.

It will be known as Motel G.

The Airstream caravan will be placed on the roof by a crane to act as an acoustic buffer from the traffic noise, the plans claim.

Large palm trees will also be craned on to the rooftop as part of the decor. The ground floor will be unchanged.

The building where the bar will be built was destroyed by fire in July 2016. The ground level was rebuilt.

There will be dining and picnic areas.

The pair unveiled complementary developments that would reflect the arched architecture of former Gold Coast landmarks such as the Pink Poodle Motel, and the still-standing Southport Bathing Pavilion and Sata Nita building in Southport.

The building will eventually be redeveloped.
