THE northern Gold Coast suburb of Coomera is in the midst of a billion dollar facelift, with a new shopping centre joining the booming retail and business precinct.

Just six months after the opening of the $500 million Westfield Coomera, the suburb is being transformed with a steam of new developments and thousands of new residents.

The latest to form part of the Coomera Town Centre is the Coomera Supercentre, a 57,000 sqm precinct retail hub. It is set to create hundreds of jobs, a new road and inject tens of millions of dollars into the economy.

The centre, officially known as the Coomera Home Idea Centre (CHIC), has been put forward by experienced developer Bayley Property Group which this week filed a development application with the Gold Coast City Council.

The complex, which is expected to carry a significant price tag, will feature a mixture of large-scale retail outlets, dining and medical centres, as well as room for more than 600 car spaces.

WHEN GOLD COAST’S POPULATION WILL HIT 1 MILLION PEOPLE

Gold Coast North Chamber of Commerce president Martin Brady said the suburb was evolving in to the region’s economic engine.

“Coomera is becoming a major employment hub in its own right as we see these projects, industrial offerings and office parks beginning to rise,” he said.

“It is clear it is no longer just a feeder suburb for Brisbane and the rest of the Gold Coast but is becoming an economic engine room on its own.

“Plus there is lots of action at the marine precinct which is also growing.”

A new road, to be known as Spottiswood Drive, will be constructed adjacent to the southern lanes of the M1 to service the development and take pressure off existing infrastructure.

Artist impressions filed with the council show a vision of the town centre precinct with significant levels of development in and around the two shopping centres, including a bridge crossing Oakey Creek.

Westfield have previously been granted approval for a second stage of its centre which is expected to follow in coming years.

There will be 46 tenancies in the development.

Area councillor and city planning boss Cr Cameron Caldwell said new centre’s economic impact would be substantial.

“This is another great sign of positive economic growth we are seeing in Coomera at the moment. This retail offering will provide hundreds of jobs for locals.

“The development of the Coomera Town Centre precinct is proving to be a catalyst to bring more investment into the area and we are seeing this bear fruit.”

The centre will be built near Westfield Coomera from four three-storey buildings, with 46 tenancies spread across its available space.

At least 22,000 sqm will be given over to showrooms, with gyms, shops, healthcare, dining and office space to take the rest of the centre.

The site has already been cleared in preparation for construction.
