A new supermarket and shopping centre complex in the city’s far north will open next year after the first sod was turned.
Construction has begun on the $25m Woolworths centre which will be built on Upper Coomera’s Reserve Road.
The project is tipped to create 350 jobs during construction and 160 more following its opening.
Woolworths state development manager Chris Sheehan said the centre was the latest step in the company’s expansion in southeast Queensland.
“The Upper Coomera development is an important part of our ongoing commitment to investing in the Gold Coast and growing region of southeast Queensland to support jobs growth and increasing demand for more localised, neighbourhood retail close to where residents live and work,” he said.
“On completion, this new Woolworths neighbourhood shopping centre at Upper Coomera will become a high quality and convenient shopping destination – ensuring residents in the immediate catchment areas don’t need to travel too far for their shopping needs.”
The centre will feature 46,00sq m of retail space with 10 tenancies, including a Woolworths Supermarket and BWS.
It will have a 230-space carpark with 70 solar panels installed on its roof.
Area councillor and acting mayor Donna Gates said development was ramping up in the suburb.
“This development has been a long time coming and the community is excited about commencement,” she said.
“There are new homes being constructed nearby and the convenience of shopping so close to our growing population will be welcomed.”
