Village Roadshow has super-sized its plans for a hotel at Movie World, proposing a $333m tower on its Pacific Hwy property.

Village is more than doubling its initial plans for a nine-level hotel, which were approved in 2017, expanding its ambitions from 400 rooms to 600 and adding a massive function centre.

The new proposal would see the WB Movie World Hotel top out at 22 storeys, and at 78.6m would be higher than the neighbouring DC Rivals Hypercoaster.

The proposal incorporates a mix of regular two-bed rooms and a selection of suites as well as a kids clubs, gym, sauna and steam room and two pools.

A feature of the new hotel would be its level-21 “panoramic sky deck”, featuring infinity pool, bar and restaurants.

The vast function centre would combine three halls, as well as break out space and kitchen areas.

In its submission to the council, planners for Village said the project would create 799 new construction jobs over two years, then 400 ongoing positions in the hotel in the first five years of operation.

It expects 876,000 customers to spend $840m in its first five years, including 130,000 people at its functions centre.

The project would take up 5.12ha at the northwestern end of VRTP’s 141.6ha site, with the hotel to be located to the right of the entrance to Movie World, next to Saltwater Creek.

The gross floor area of the development would be 38,519 sqm.

The hotel would also allow easy access to nearby Wet‘nWild, TopGolf, Outback Spectacular, Paradise Country and its Village Roadshow Studios.

Village has previously rejected suggestions it was planning a casino for the site.

The hotel will be Village Roadshow’s latest in a hefty pipeline of investments on the Gold Coast, which in recent years, have included the $35 million DC Rivals Hypercoaster, Top Golf and its $50 million Atlantis precinct at SeaWorld.

The park also plans to launch a $40m Wizard of Oz precinct in 2024.

The hotel was designed by Gold Coast firm DBI, in collaboration with BurlingBrown.

DBI also designed the Darling at The Star Gold Coast, and the proposed new hotel shares some of its distinctive “surfboard stack” lines.

Village’s initial approval was current to 2027, however the drastic change of plans have required it to resubmit its application.

The hotel, if approved, would be the Gold Coast’s second theme park hotel, along with Village’s SeaWorld Resort.

The new plans come after Ardent Leisure dumped its $75m plan for a hotel and tourist park at Dreamworld after a breakdown in negotiations with the developer.
