The Beach Shack Currumbin is closing down to be replaced by an Australian-Italian restaurant

Locals have been nipping to this well-known cafe, loved for its laid-back atmosphere and stunning views, for years. Here’s why it’s closing down.

AFTER decades as a staple of the southern Gold Coast, the Beach Shack at Currumbin is closing its doors – but locals will still be able to pop down for coffee and something to eat, with a new venue to open in its place.

Owners Tim and Mary Gabbe have sold the business they’ve run for five years so they can see more of their family in Victoria.

After a shutdown of seven weeks for its vibrant new fit-out, the shack is set for a new life as an Australian-Italian restaurant, which will operate several nights of the week, with coffee still available during the day.

The Shack has operated as a two-storey restaurant and cafe overlooking the glittering sea at Currumbin for around 20 years, and before that it was run as a single-level cafe.

Locals have been nipping into the site for a bite to eat since long before then, with the site operating as a bakery in the 1920s.

Mr Gabbe, a farmer for 36 years before he and nurse Mary took on the Shack, said the couple was looking forward to semi-retirement.

“I’ve had 41 years working and I just want a bit of time out – and five years in this industry is hard work,” he said.

“It’s been good fun, we’ve met a lot of people, made some good friends and our staff are like family.

“A lot of people are sad to see us go and we’ll miss them too.”

Long-time customer Jennifer Ernst said the Shack had been a meeting place for Currumbin locals for years.

“I’m in a little crew of neighbours who all go down every morning for our coffee there,” she said.

“We will definitely miss it – everybody knows the Beach Shack – but if a good little Italian place opens there, it will be awesome.”
