If you’ve been craving a vintage French wine with a delectable dry-aged duck, the wait is over, with internationally-acclaimed Cantonese Restaurant T’ang Court opening on the Gold Coast this week.
T’ang Court, at The Langham Gold Coast, holds three Michelin stars at its Hong Kong venue, with Australian operators aiming for the same quality in its first Australian foray.
While the intimate spaces, striking artwork and mouth-watering menu have already drawn 20 booking for opening night on Thursday, it’s the 350-strong wine list that’s likely to cause a stir.
Langham general manager John O’Shea said the hotel had managed to secure back vintages from across the globe for the 80-seat venue.
Local favourites like Penfolds Grange and St Henri and Henschke’s Hill of Grace feature strongly on the list, as well as overseas tipples One Opus, an intimidating selection of French wines and an array of hard-to-find collabs between Chinese and French winemakers.
If you’re not willing to part with $6080 for a bottle of 1991 Penfolds Grange Bin 95, $1380 will buy you a 150ml glass or for $725 you can enjoy a 75ml taste.
Among the racks, stored under lock-and-key, are numerous wines that fall squarely in the “very special occasion” category, such as the Bordeaux blend Château Lafite Rothschild 2001 Pauillac, which at $13,180 is the restaurant’s most expensive wine.
T’ang Court offers set multi-course menus from $128 to $238 per person as well as an extensive a la carte range featuring soups, seafoods and more.
Mr O’Shea, whose personal favourites are the hot and sour soup and the Peking duck, said the restaurant was designed to reflect the timelessness of the Tang Dynasty – China’s golden age.
“We’re excited to see such a respected and sought-after dining experience breath new life into true fine dining here on the Gold Coast and are looking forward to welcoming guests of The Langham, locals of Queensland and travellers into this one-of-a-kind culinary delight,” he said.
Director of Chinese Cuisine for Langham Hospitality Group, Howard Lam is known for opening T’ang Court restaurants across the globe.
“Authentic, traditional Cantonese fine dining is comparatively rare in Australia, so we’re thrilled to bring this unique experience to life for locals and travellers, from other states and even internationally,” Mr Lam said.
“Diners at T’ang Court on the Gold Coast will be able to indulge in the same golden age Cantonese flavours that have earned T’ang Court at The Langham, Hong Kong three Michelin stars and seen its many other award-winning sister restaurants across the world become highly-sought-after dining destinations.”
Specialities include a tantalising three-part ode to the traditional Cantonese duck: duck pancake with chef’s special hoi sin sauce; duck bun with lychee and raspberry sauce, with
supplemental caviar; and sliced duck breast and leg accompanied with plum sauce; sauteed pearl meat with ginger, shallot and Asian greens; and spicy black tiger prawn with roasted garlic.
The restaurant will be open five days; serving lunch from 12-3pm, with dinner from 5.30- 11pm, Wednesday to Sunday each week.
Reservations are now open for the new T’ang Court at The Langham, Gold Coast, available through the website.
