Southport Yacht Club: First look at redevelopment plans

The Southport Yacht Club will be dramatically expanded under plans which would see it become an in-demand events and conference centre.

Gold Coast housing prices skyrocket

The Southport Yacht Club will be dramatically expanded under plans which would see it become an in-demand events and conference centre.

Bosses of the 78-year-old club have lodged plans with the Gold Coast City Council to expand and revamp its facility to bring them into line with its new $9m superyacht dock.

Key features of the revamp will include new toilets on the marina, a fresh dry dock for vessels and its top level being expanded to cover the same floorspace as the ground floor. The top level expansion will allow it to host large-scale hospitality events and conferences.

Southport Yacht Club general manager Brett James could not put a dollar figure on the project at such an early stage but said that it would take several years to realise the full scope of works.

“Most places for conferences and lunches are in hotels and if we make upstairs twice the size, we will be able to have the facilities big enough – there will be nothing like it on the Gold Coast to have northern views of the water,” he said.

“This will just be the start and it will take a few years to complete but what we are doing now is getting the ball rolling.

“Now that we have the mega yacht berth, we have a lot of vessels coming in, big ones which have never visited the Gold Coast before, so we are trying to match the club with what we have there.”

Features of the development include:

* The demolition of the existing chandlery building and a replacement in a nearby location.

* The existing waterfront dining terrace will be expanded, while the toilets and workshop buildings will also be replaced.

* The existing boat maintenance facility will be replaced by a multistorey dry-boat storage structure.

The work is expected to be completed in stages.

Mr James said the yacht club would focus on the main building first and leave the dry dock facilities for later to allow for the state government to reveal what it is planning to do with the land immediately to its north.

According to a planning report lodged with the council, the project is consistent with the transformation of the Spit under the government’s Master Plan.

“The proposal will provide a high quality and contemporary extension to the clubhouse as well as other improvements, so that it can continue to be valued and enjoyed by future generations,” the report reads.

“The proposal will conserve the low rise-built form of The Spit and natural assets will be protected.”
