‘Into liquidation’: Small and medium-sized business to see minimum wage rise pressure

A six-figure tax bill has been revealed as the kill shot for Miami bar and restaurant The Henchman, which went into liquidation in February after a rocky four years.

The bar, solely directed and owned by Jared Fairall, 35, owed $642,835 to the ATO and more than $65,000 to other creditors, according to a new report from liquidator Glen Oldman.

The company behind the trendy but trouble-plagued restaurant and bar went into liquidation on February 26.

Others owed money by The Henchman include musicians who performed there, advertising companies, food and drink suppliers and Energy Australia, the liquidator’s report said.

Among those out of pocket are musicians The Friday Guys, Blue Iris, Greer Sullivan and Kent Tonscheck – owed $800, $700, $330 and $330 respectively; Global Food & Wine Gold Coast, which is owed $22,020; Energy Australia, which is owed $7643; and Gourmet Meats Gold Coast, which is owed $4459.

The Gold Coast Bulletin has contacted Mr Fairall for comment.

The Henchman, which was known for its live music and pub grub, is close to construction work on Stage 3 of the Gold Coast light rail, where the Miami North station is set to be built.

According to ASIC records, Mr Fairall also lives at the Henchman Ave bar in the bustling seaside suburb.

Mr Fairall and his business have endured some rocky years – in 2022, he was found not guilty of raping a customer at his home on the evening of February 1, 2020, after meeting her while working at the Miami bar.

The same year, Joel Jaimie Pavlides was handed a four-year suspended prison sentence for trafficking cocaine to an undercover cop via social media app Snapchat while working behind the bar of The Henchman.

Last year, The Henchman had appealed a guilty verdict in which it was found to have breached pandemic lockdown laws and ordered to pay more than $6000 in penalties and costs.

The appeal has been discontinued.

In December 2021, Mr Fairall was accused of making abusive comments online allegedly calling a woman “the worst type of human in the world” and a Facebook group she participates in an “anti-male, d**k-hating, ugly side of feminism slag whores group”.
