There will be more than one way to get cool on the Gold Coast this summer, with plans to build a chill new venue in the heart of Surfers Paradise.
Plans have been lodged with the Gold Coast City Council to build IceBar Surfers, a new nightspot where skimpy dresses will be a no-go, with the venue being kept at -10C at all times.
It will be built inside the Hilton precinct and is operated by Melbourne-based company Three Polar Bears and a Penguin, headed by directors Anthony John Murray, Bobby Ian Stephens and Chan Hung Tu.
It will be directly based on the popular Melbourne IceBar which is situated in Federation Square.
According to the plans, it will be open 10am to midnight seven days a week for ticketed 45-minute sessions open to 100 people at a time for its two bars.
The ground floor will be the Ice bar, which will have 35 tonnes of ice installed inside.
The top floor will be the Mirror Bar, which will have completely enclosed mirrored windows.
A report on the proposed venue reveals it will be targeted as a drawcard for the suburb.
IceBar Melbourne … has a reputation of a being a premier tourist attraction in Melbourne that supports a unique entertainment experience for locals and tourists,” the report reads.
“The IceBar will be a ticketed venue and patrons will receive custom designed winter capes,
gloves, socks and Ugg boots before entering into the IceBar room which is kept at a constant
-10C.
“The guests are surrounded by 35 tonnes of ice, with walls, tables, chairs and sculptures, and even the bar made entirely of ice.
“Guests are generally limited to 45 minutes within the bar due to the extreme cold.”
The report notes special clothing will also be needed for the Mirror Bar.
“The IceBar is extremely cold and specific clothing is required; in addition, the Mirror Bar is made completely of mirrors, as a result, non-slip coverings to go over patrons’ existing footwear, stretch shorts to purchase where needed and cotton gloves are provided before being directed up the staircase.
“The mirrors will be completely enclosed with no windows to better simulate the mirror environment and create the complete mirror base atmosphere without the impacts of natural light.
“These venues are definitely not establishments where you can walk in off the street, there are specific guidelines to manage patron numbers and the clothing attire that needs to be enforced prior to entering the bar.”
