One of the Gold Coast’s most famous beachside resorts will be demolished this month and work will begin immediately on the $57m luxury tower that will replace it.

Gold Coast housing prices skyrocket

THE Komune resort at Coolangatta will be demolished this month and work will begin immediately on the $57m luxury tower that will replace it.

Brisbane-based Spyre Group’s 12-storey Cala Dei was fast-tracked after all apartments were sold in less than four weeks.

Spyre says it plans to fast-track two new projects on the Coast as bulldozers move in on the Komune tower.

“Cala Dei will transform the pristine beachfront site from a boisterous hub into a serene collection of residences to accommodate a new generation of Coolangatta locals,” Spyre director Andrew Malouf said.

“Given that the southern Gold Coast appeal is higher than ever, we are excited to start bringing this collection of ultra-desirable homes to life.

“The nature of Cala Dei’s sellout has definitely solidified our commitment to the Gold Coast and we have proceeded to acquire a further two beachfront sites that we intend to launch later this year.”

These projects include a site at Burleigh Heads’ Goodwin Terrace, where an “ultra luxury” three-unit project is planned, and another yet to be unveiled.

Builder Hutchinsons has been appointed to build the 30-unit tower. It is expected to open in early 2023.

The penthouse was bought by a Gold Coast family for $7.1m.

The units, a mixture of two and three bedrooms, sold for an average of $1.9m, while 11 apartments changed hands for more than $2.5m each.

Of those buying into the tower, 55 per cent were from the state’s southeast, 42 per cent went to interstate buyers while a single buyer came from Singapore.

The existing Komune tower is expected to be gone by Christmas.

It will cap a long history of failed developments on the site.

In 2018 the Planning and Environment Court rejected a Hotel Komune bid to build a 27-storey, five-star hotel at the base of Greenmount Hill on Marine Parade.

It did not comply with either the 2003 or 2016 City Plans, the court ruled.

The proposed 100-suite hotel, which would also have had 94 apartments, cafes and restaurants overlooking Greenmount Beach, was approved by the council in April 2017.

Two months later eight neighbours at the Lindor Apartments appealed, taking the decision to the Planning and Environment Court.

After receiving legal advice, the council withdrew its support for the project in March 2018.
