THE new Dorsett tower at The Star in Broadbeach will be among Australia’s first hotels designed to be Covid-safe.
External construction of the $400m, 53-storey supertower was completed this month ahead of a near-six-month fit out.
Dorsett Gold Coast general manager Michael Foster said the new tower would be unique, having been redesigned during the pandemic with special features to be Covid-safe including the maximising of fresh air in the lifts.

“We know the nature of travel has changed in the past 18 months and guests are looking for other things in their hotels, including safety, hygiene and health,” he said.
“We have made sure that items and process such as paperless check-in are part of the day-to-day operations, which means our guests will get a hands-off experience.
“We are in the process of winding up the construction phase and, by the back-end of this year, we will begin the fitting out.”
‘DISASTROUS’: WHAT WENT WRONG IN EXCLUSIVE COAST SUBURB
The Dorsett tower, which will include both a 313-room hotel and the Star Residences residential units, will open in the first quarter of 2022.
Mr Foster will oversee the opening of the hotel, the Hong Kong-based international brand’s first in Australia, as well as its staff.
He has more than 15 years’ experience, with the Dorsett to be the second international hotel launch he has overseen.
“It is exciting because it is not something all hoteliers get to do, let alone open a new hotel and have that be the first of its kind in this market,” he said.
Mr Foster said the fit-out would take more than three months and include everything from decor and furniture down to the teaspoons in each room.
He described the Dorsett’s interior as “bespoke” and unlike any other hotel in the chain.
“The plan is to give people a touch of Gold Coast when they stay with us and not in a kitschy way,” he said.
“It’s about really understanding what people love about it.
“We are working with local businesses such as galleries and brewers so that we can be part of the community.”
Construction is also underway on the Dorsett’s sister tower, a 63-storey hotel.
The Star has approval for a $2.3bn masterplan that allows for a total of seven towers on Broadbeach Island. A decision on the remaining three towers is expected within six months.
