Currumbin SLSC plans to demolish ‘dilapidated’ nipper clubhouse

ONE of the Gold Coast’s leading surf life saving clubs will demolish its “dilapidated” nippers building and replace it with a state-of-the-art modern complex.
Currumbin Vikings have lodged plans with the Gold Coast City Council to redevelop the ageing Pacific Parade building which has served as a training ground for three generations of nippers.
Club bosses say a new facility will better suit its growing youth branch.
“The nippers club has operated from the current premises since 1960 and the existing two-storey building is aged and quite dilapidated in condition,” the club said in a planning report to the council.
“It has become inadequate from a safety and function perspective to continue to accommodate the burgeoning junior club membership base.
“Importantly, it is emphasised that the fundamental purpose of the redevelopment is to re-establish a contemporary and functional surf lifesaving facility for, and to meet the needs of, the Currumbin nippers.”
The club has 324 junior members aged from under-six to under-14.
It is the latest Gold Coast surf club to in recent years to upgrade or expand their facilities.
Kurrawa SLSC received an entirely new clubhouse ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games while Burleigh Heads-Mowbray Park’s clubhouse is in the midst of a multimillion-dollar upgrade.
The new building will have a “modulated design” that will be used for club activities, as well as storage, the sale of surf club equipment and apparel, changing facilities and training rooms.
However, the club notes it will not be hired out for public use for private functions such as weddings or birthday celebrations.
Club representatives say they have met with the council, including area councillor Gail O’Neill. The proposal is expected to go before council in early 2022. If approved, work is scheduled to begin soon after.
