Famous Swingin’ Safari site in Surfers Paradise on Gold Coast hits market with plans for 34-level tower

A 34-storey tower is planned for the former site of a famed Gold Coast nightspot Swingin Safari. But now there’s something else coming down the pipeline.

THE former Swingin’ Safari site is on the market with plans for a 34-level tower with 139 apartments.

Auscont Holdings Pty Ltd, linked to Zhi Qing Wu, bought the 916sq m block at 2945-2947 Surfers Paradise Blvd, Surfers Paradise, for $2.2  million in 2014.

It was home to the famous Swingin’ Safari nightspot, a popular fixture of Gold Coast night-life that closed in 2014.

Savills Gold Coast’s Kevin Carmody, who is marketing the property in an expressions-of-interest campaign, said the owner had informally sounded out interest in the site before launching a sale campaign.

He said the property came with approved plans for a tower with 96 serviced apartments and 43 units. It is next to the Northcliffe light rail station and about 500m from the beach. The site was previously approved by the council for a 101-unit tower.

The property was sold to Auscont Holdings by veteran developer Chris Buist, who had acquired the property for $1.25 million in 2003.

The site, which is home to a Queenslander house, started as a holiday home in the 1950s and then became Queensland’s first wine bar in the 1970s under the name Bacchus Lounge.

An expressions-of-interest campaign closes on November 27.
