FROM a boutique distillery to cafe bars and night markets, the number of licensed venues on the Gold Coast has grown just in time for the silly season.

State Government data reveals at least 33 new venues have been approved for new liquor licences in the past three months, giving locals many more options to explore for a festive season tipple.

According to the industry, taking a leap into the bar scene is less about becoming a party space and more about catching the “casual drinks’’ market and diversifying revenue streams.

The trend follows consistent growth of at least 21.5 per cent in the Gold Coast’s accommodation and food services industry since 2008.

According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2833 businesses in the sector were operating on the Gold Coast last year, up from 2331 in 2007/2008.

Most of those business had 19 employees or fewer.

For the owners of Putt Putt at Mermaid Beach, the addition of a bar was a welcome offering, just in time for the centre’s 50th anniversary.

Vodka slushies had proven popular among putters.

“There was demand for people who wanted a drink with their game so we thought why not,” Putt Putt manager Collette Harvey said.

“It isn’t the main focus of the venue but we find it is good for date nights or just having a beer with mates while playing together.

“People tend to make a bit more of a night of it.”

Similarly for the Carrara Night Markets, a licensed space was not a feature but an added bonus for people wanting a night out in a family friendly environment.

The markets, which recorded their “largest weekend ever” last week, reported sell-out crowds keen to spend time with good music, atmosphere and a cold beer.

In Southport, a new wholesale vodka distillery and tasting room has been approved.

Owners Paul and Vanessa Chapman are keeping their cards close to their chest as they add the final touches to a 1920s prohibition-style tasting room.

Panezski Artisan Distillery will focus on locally made vodkas and some polish beers.

“We are hoping to open just before Christmas,” Mr Chapman said.

“It is very much about sustainability so we are starting small and beginning the process from raw materials.”

According to the Office of Liquor and Gaming public data base, both the Titans Oxenford Community Club and the Pink Monkey Kitchen and Bar at Burleigh are awaiting approval on extension of operating hours. Submissions for both are due by early December.
