A TOWER inspired by the rosewood tree and the Chinese concept of yin and yang could soon replace one of Broadbeach’s most dilapidated buildings and be the first step towards increasingly high-density development along the light rail route.

The 41-storey tower is earmarked for a site on the Gold Coast Highway and Rosewood Ave.

The Rosewood development, if approved by council, will feature 144 apartments, 40 serviced apartments and 180 car parks.

The project is the subject of a development application submitted to council just weeks before Christmas.

Sydney-based company Rosewood Broadbeach Pty Ltd is behind the proposal.

Planit Consulting director Bede Emmett, speaking on behalf of the developers, said the project would revitalise the area.

“The area where Rosewood sits is predominantly low-to-mid-rise apartment buildings and many of the buildings in the area are starting to show their age, so hopefully this project will help the council kickstart the transformation of the suburb,” he said.

“The architectural design of the building was inspired by the rosewood tree and it also takes into account the Chinese yin and yang principles.

“When you consider that you have the light rail going right past the front door, the council would prefer an architecturally pleasing building on the site to a run-down property.’’

The plans include restaurants and commercial operations on the first two floors and above that apartments, which will include a mix of one, two and three-bedroom units.

The Rosewood Ave site was once home to the Oriental Garden restaurant but had become highly dilapidated following the eatery’s closure in 2008.

In recent years it had become a frequent target for vandalism and graffiti.

The site was sold in September last year for nearly $4 million by former area councillor turned real estate agent Eddy Sarroff.

Area councillor Paul Taylor said the new high-density project was a sign of things to come.

“This is another fantastic project for the area,’’ he said.

“It has great architecture and continues to make Broadbeach what I rate as the Gold Coast’s No. 1 destination.’’

“This is the first step towards the high-density projects both the council and State Government have planned for within 600m of the light rail routes.

“I think it is clear with the application for this project that developers are starting to realise the benefits of these locations.”
