THE Gold Coast’s oldest bowls club has issued an urgent SOS to members, asking them to give what they would usually spend at the club as a donation to help keep it afloat during COVID-19.
The novel idea from the Southport Bowls Club was contained in an unsigned email to members on Saturday, which said the club’s “number one concern” was minimum cash flow.
The club has been closed since Prime Minister Scott Morrison last week announced clubs would be shut to help slow the spread of coronavirus.
“Despite the fact that the club is closed we still have significant outgoings to be met and these certainly exceed any reserves that we have,” the message reads.

The cost for the greens alone is estimated at $2000 per week.
The email suggests that members consider how much they spend at the club each week and make a “weekly contribution” in that vicinity during the COVID-19 shutdown.
“The good news is that we have had several offers of support and we recommend this method of ensuring that we all have a club to return to. A club that will be in good shape and ready to go.”
The Southport Bowls Club was founded in 1914 and has 550 members.
