Parents have an opportunity to save a fortune on school holiday travel, with a major airline dropping unprecedented sale fares.

Virgin Australia has bucked the trend of jacking up tickets for peak season travel, by slashing the prices of 300,000 domestic flights during the July school break.

Tickets - some as cheap as $45 - are being offered to popular destinations including Perth, Sunshine Coast and Hamilton Island.

It means families are not left with the quandary of either stumping up a fortune to travel in the designated period - or pulling their children out of school in the weeks before or after.

Sales on airfares will start at $45 one way.

Sydneysiders can head to Byron Bay for just $45 one-way and the Gold Coast for $65, while Melburnians can go to Hobart or the Gold Coast for $79.

For those travelling from Brisbane to Mackay or Hamilton Island, prices are from $99 and $109 (one way) respectively.

The travel period is from July 1 to August 31 this year.

Byron Bay is among the popular destinations you can travel to for the fraction of a price.

“Amidst the high cost of living, our sale is a great opportunity for families to travel over the upcoming school holiday period with great value airfares,” Virgin Australia executive Libby Minogue said.

“We hope the sale will allow even more Australians to take a break with their families over the school holidays.

“We urge travellers to get in quick to avoid missing out on the incredible deals – especially over the school holiday period.”

The flight frenzy sale starts Thursday at 4pm and ends midnight on Saturday, June 8.

Virgin Australia sale fares include Velocity Frequent Flyer Points and Status Credits.
