An urgent recall has been issued for a slew of national retain chains including Woolworths, Bunnings and BIG W due to the risk a popular product may pose to kids.

Product Safety Australia issued a recall notice on Friday for the Energizer A76 Miniature 1.5V Alkaline/Watch button batteries, sold in packs of four, which were taken off the market due to their failure to meet mandatory information standards.

The batteries are required to feature a warning symbol advising consumers to keep them out of children’s reach, but the warning was not visible as it was covered by a sticker on the back of the product’s packaging.

“There is a risk of serious injury if the battery is swallowed or inserted in the body,” Product Safety said.

The Energizer batteries were sold at a number of national chains, including IGA, Bunnings, Harvey Norman, Woolworths, JB HI-FI, Officeworks, Mitre 10, Big W, Australian Pharmaceutical, Symbion, Amazon, AWM Electrical, Blackwoods, Brave Logistics, CETNAJ-MML, Complete Office Supplies, D & W Electrical, Haymans Electrical, John R Turk, MM Electrical Merchandising, Rexel Holdings, Supercheap Auto and TLE Electrical.

The recalled products were sold nationally and online from May 5 to July 12 in 2022. Consumers can identify the products by their barcode, 8888021306835.

Consumers should immediately place the batteries out of children’s reach, and can contact Energizer at a76compliance@energizer.com if they wish for a warning label to be sent out.

It is the second batteries product to be recalled in Australia in a matter of days, after a recall was announced for the Panasonic CR2016 Lithium coin battery 3V earlier this week.

The packaging of those batteries failed to include a warning label at all.

“Swallowing can lead to chemical burns, perforation of soft tissue, and death,” reads the warning that should be on the packaging.

“Severe burns can occur within two hours of ingestion. Seek medical attention immediately.”

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), who handles product safety recalls, said the warning is “required for products containing button/coin batteries.”

“Consumers should immediately stop using the battery and keep it out of reach of children,” reads their recall notice.

“Return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or replacement.”
