Welcome to the Trading Day blog for Monday, March 3. The ASX 200 index closed 0.9 per cent higher to 8245.70 points.
The heavyweight banks trimmed earlier losses, while insurers were down on cyclone jitters. Miners and real estate companies performed strong.
On Friday, Wall Street closed stronger with the S&P 500 and the tech-focused Nasdaq both up 1.6 per cent and the Dow Jones gaining 1.4 per cent.
Cryptocurrency giant bitcoin is trading above $US93,000 at 5.05pm AEDT.
The Aussie dollar is trading around US62.17c.
