THE cheesy best of ’80s and ’90s music is coming to the Surfers Paradise party scene, while new owners of a Broadbeach dance music institution have invested in a $500,000 revamp.

Owners of popular Brisbane nightclub Retro’s Cocktail Lounge, which exclusively plays hits from the 1980s, 1990s and Noughties, are rebranding the old Bourbon Bar on Orchid Avenue.

Retro’s is also known for huge “fishbowl” cocktails which adequately serve two people for $30-plus a pop.

Meanwhile, Broadbeach dance club institution Platinum is officially relaunching tonight after a Sydney mother and daughter team bought the venue this year.

Astrid Woods and daughter Rachelle, the new assistant manager, have kept the venue’s manager and house acts on but revamped the interior.

Mrs Woods’ husband, Rob, owns NSW building company Commercial Interior Projects and sent five staff to the Coast for a month to carry out a $500,000 refurbishment.

A $50,000 lighting system has been installed above the dance floor, all the bar tops have been relaid and the entire venue has been reupholstered with swanky new furniture additions too.

Sydney-based Mr Wood said he was in his mid-40s and had never been in Platinum — “my nightclub days are behind me” — but his partner bought it as a Coast business opportunity.

He is in the process of setting up a Queensland branch of Commercial Interior Projects, which currently employs about 60 people.

Retro’s events manager Tammy Wood said the new Surfers venue would open late this month or next month.

“It’s going to be the same as the one in Brisbane which is all about old-school hits.

“For all those millennials who love the ’80s and ’90s music it will be an iconic party stop.”

It will only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in Surfers Paradise.

Retro’s owners are the Hallmark Group which started award-winning Irish bar Finn McCools in Brisbane.
