A DESIRE to set themselves apart from traditional law firms drove Ben McTaggart and Mary Grant to set up their own boutique practice.

Ms Grant, who is the president of Young Professionals, with Mr McTaggart launched McTaggart Grant Lawyers on February 10 after they left top-tier practice MinterEllison.

Mr McTaggart said they both shared a vision of how they wanted to deliver corporate and commercial legal services.

“We had similar values and we believe in servicing clients in a particular way,” he said.

“That was the catalyst for us to go out and start a practice.”

Ms Grant said they did not want to be a traditional firm.

“There were constraints in the traditional service delivery model,” she said.

“We wanted to deliver personable service in a concise and timely way and cut through the noise and confusion that exists in the overcrowded legal services market.

“We have the top-tier pedigree and can deliver the same job but our personalised service sets us apart.

“When you come to us you deal directly with the decision makers of the firm, which avoids unnecessary delays and lays the foundation for building trusted partnerships.”

The pair have taken serviced office space on level 15 of Bundall’s Corporate Centre and say they plan to grow their client base by tapping into each of their respective business networks.

Mr McTaggart said another aspect that sets them apart is a willingness to “embrace technology”.

They have adopted a practice management software system that has an in-built function where documents can be shared live with clients. Clients can add notes ‘live’ while they work on the documents.

“It also means you do not need to email documents backwards and forwards. It saves time.”

Mr McTaggart said they had no desire to become a “full service law firm” covering all aspects of law.

“There are plenty of those already,” he said.

“We have the skills and expertise to solve even the most complex of legal matters and unlike many counterparts we provide clear advice and effective solutions.”
