A BILLION-dollar American sandwich is preparing to take over Australia and the Gold Coast has been chosen as the battlefront.
Italian-American style sub restaurant Jersey Mike will open its first Australian store at Q Super Store in Mermaid Waters on Wednesday and the company’s founder says more are on the way.
“We are planning six around the Gold Coast and Brisbane areas but we wanted to do it on the Coast first because of the city’s community,” said Jersey Mike founder, Peter Cranco, 58.
“We want to avoid the tourist areas and head inland to be a part of the community because that’s how we start to connect with people.
“All of our stores will be in places where you can find soccer mums and schools.”
At 17, Mr Cranco bought into a single sandwich store and four decades later the business now boasts 1500 stores across the world.
The company is spending around $400,000 fitting out each store.
They will all feature “up-market” authentic deli-style sub sandwiches with deli meats and cheeses sliced in front of the customer
The topside roast beef is trimmed, tied and cooked in-store alongside Italian-style meatballs.
Mr Cranco said his plan was to open another 1200 stores in coming years with many destined for Australia.
He said traditional fast food companies would not survive in today’s health-focused market and promised to make food quality in Australia his top priority.
“I started making sandwiches at 14 and I still love everything about it,” he said.
“We make sure everything is freshly cut right in front of you and everything is of the highest quality.
“The days of burgers and fries are over and people will no longer buy stuff like that.
“That’s why we will do well here, because people will recognise the quality of the food.
“Once people try one they will be return customers.
Mr Cranco said he would continue to expand across the rest of Australia after the first Gold Coast stores were settled.
