State’s reveals new border rules for vaccinated travellers from midnight

Tasmania has eased its border restrictions for double jabbed travellers but it won’t budge for those who are unvaccinated.

Tasmania records 1,310 new COVID-19 cases

Tasmania's border restrictions for fully vaccinated travellers will further ease from midnight tonight.

Under the newly relaxed rules, those who are double jabbed no longer need to register their travel or pass a Covid-19 test to enter.

Restrictions remain in place for travellers who aren't fully vaccinated and are still required to register their trip, quarantine and return a negative Covid-19 test on day five of their isolation.

Premier Peter Gutwein on Tuesday and said the border rules for the unvaccinated would be reviewed in future.

He said they were an “important” measure that needed to remain because it protected the state’s health system.

“While we’re not seeing the numbers in hospital like other jurisdictions, the evidence in other states demonstrates that unvaccinated people are up to 24 times more likely to end up in ICU compared to those who are vaccinated,” Mr Gutwein said.

The Premier again advised eligible residents to get their booster shots and urged those who had not yet been vaccinated to do so.

He said the state was still in a transition phase and wasn’t yet living with Covid.

“At times it can be awkward and people can be anxious but we need to transition to a point where we can live with Covid.

“Over coming months we will move into that phase where we treat Covid in exactly the same way we treat other respiratory diseases like the flu.”

Tasmania recorded 1310 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, with two people admitted to intensive care and one is on a ventilator.

Currently, 98.71 per cent of residents aged 16 and over have had one dose while 95.19 per cent are fully vaccinated.
