South Australia records 634 new cases on Christmas Day

South Australia’s Covid-19 cases have again risen with the state recording 634 new infections on Christmas.

South Australia’s Omicron outbreak has spread even further after the state recorded 634 new Covid-19 cases on Christmas Day.

There were 21,573 tests conducted over the past 24 hours.

Of the new cases, 47 are children and 34 are teenagers.

From the total of 634 cases, 597 of the infections are under investigation as to how the person caught the virus.

Daily case numbers have risen quickly within one week after only 105 were recorded on Monday.

By Friday, the state recorded 688 infections.

Premier Steven Marshall said the sheer volume of Omicron cases could overwhelm the health system even though the new strain didn’t appear to be as severe as Delta.

He urged residents to keep their Christmas celebrations as Covid safe as possible.

“We have caps in place with 30 people allowed in the household and we're asking people to strictly adhere to those arrangements,” he said.

“If possible, hold them outside. Make sure you are maintaining good social distancing and hygiene measures.

“We are concerned about the most vulnerable, especially over the Christmas break, so we're asking people to be very prudent in terms of meeting with older people.

“Yes, there could be the joy of seeing them on Christmas Day but that could be highly problematic.”
